We are the "The Sonic Girls" based in Olympia, Washington. We are a first year team with excited young girls planning to show their engineering skills. Our team motto is " Spirit To Achieve". We work as a team to find solutions by listening to every team member's ideas. We are using simple machines with WeDo software to complete our project.
Team Research:
How bees are saving the elephants in the shared habitat? We did our research in Wikipedia and YouTube videos of Elephant and Bee project in Africa. In Africa, Elephants were destroying the farms, so farmers were killing the elephants. Dr. Lucy King, a researcher in "Save the Elephant" project found out that elephants are scared of bees. Elephant broke the trees with beehives and bees stung the elephant. Elephants have long memory and don’t want to get stung by bees. So they run away from bees. Dr.Lucy and her team found that speakers with bee sound chased away elephants and the microphones recorded elephants producing rumbling sound to communicate with other elephants that there were bees. Bee fence is built around the farm with lot of beehives tied to the wire around the fence. when the elephant tries to enter the farm and touches the wire and the hives swing and release the bees. The elephants start to run away from the buzzing sound and warn other elephants to do the same.

Our Animal •Elephant is a 4 legged largest land animal, huge ears, strong legs, long trunk and curved, sharp tusk. •Elephants live in wild in Africa and Asia. •They have a very long memory. •They are herbivores and survive on variety of plants in their habitat. Challenges: •Elephant’s habitat is being changed into farmlands, so they enter the farms looking for food and destroying the crops. As a result, there is a conflict between the human and elephants. Solution: •By keeping the elephants away from the farmlands by using fences with bee hives. Our Model *Our Model has a farm which includes •Farmers •Corn field •Flower beds and bushes •Wind Mill connected to water wheel •Farm is surrounded by fence with 13 bee hives •Elisa the Honey Bee and the hive •“Ellie” the Elephant Design: •Make the elephant move forward, stop at the fence and move back •Wind Mill powers the water wheel to get the water to the farm •Design fence with bee hives •Farm Build: Wind mill and water wheel: We built the wind mill and the water wheel. Used motor to show how windmill works. Our challenge was to connect the wind mill to the water wheel Problem: •First, we tried Long line of gears attached to the wind mill. Gear-Gear-Gear-Gear. It didn’t work. •Second, we tried long line of pulley with rubber bands attached to the wind mill. Pulley-Pulley-Pulley-Pulley.It didn’t work. Solution: Finally we tried Long line of gears, two pulleys and a rubber band together. Gear-Pulley-Pulley-Gear-Gear-Gear.It worked! Elephant •First we built the body of the elephant and attached the smart hub and motor to the body. •Second, we attached the axle and the small gear to the motor. •Problem 1: We had only one motor but four legs to move. Solution:Axle-Small-Gear •Big Gear-Small Gear-Big Gear. •Big Gears-Axles-Across Body-Big Gears •Four Legs attached to the four Big Gears •Problem 2: Elephant legs were wobbly Solution: Attach end of the leg bones to the body
